Description
INDULGENTIA PLENARIA IN ARTICULO MORTIS
Broadsheet (361x493 mm) printed on recto only. The letterpress text is printed within a richly engraved border featuring portraits of the Pope, St Peter and St Paul, as well as depictions of the Holy Door, a holy portrait of Christ, and views of the four major basilicas of Rome. The names of the beneficiaries of the indulgence and the date are written in by hand. The Pope's seal is at the bottom. Traces of folding, some staining, but very well preserved.
Sumptuously printed indulgence given by Pope Leo XII to a family, probably from nothern Italy (Inz, Regis, Sbressa and Cojana are the surnames indicated), who went to Rome on the occasion of the 1825 Jubilee, the only jubilee held in the 19th century. The indulgence was given only to people who were present in Rome in person and were about to leave.
