Magnificent tale by Pushkin illustrated by Zworykine and entirely lithographed by L. BARTAUD.
The artist, who also illustrated "Boris Godunov" by Pushkin, masters the art of the traditional Russian icon. His lithographs, sometimes inlaid with gold, figurative characters, animals but also ornaments and text frames, immerse you in the visual universe of traditional medieval Russia.
The artist, born in Moscow, painted murals in the churches of the imperial village of Tsarskoe Zelo (today Pushkin City) near Saint Petersburg, before immigrating to Paris in 1921. He then decorated the Orthodox Church of Christ the Savior in Asnières-sur-Seine.
His style is built of strong and precise lines with bright colors. It is a wonder for the eyes.
