When this book was published it was a Muslim Sultanate under His Highness Seyyid Khalifa-Bin-Harub, Sultan of Zanzibar - who is depicted in the frontispiece. The author Major Pearce was Governor and Commissioner in Nyasaland (now Malawi) and was later working for the British Government in Zanzibar.
