Acquaforte e bulino, firmata in lastra in basso a sinistra. Esemplare tratto dalla prima edizione dell’opera, con l’indirizzo dell’autore stesso. Bellissima prova, impressa ad inchiostro bruno su carta vergata coeva recante filigrana non identificabile, con ampli margini, in ottimo stato di conservazione. Altro lavoro di grande suggestione architettonica, questo foglio dedicato al Papa si può considerare come un vero e proprio monumento che si accompagna con le invenzioni architettoniche che eseguì nella chiesa di Santa Maria del Priorato sull’Aventino. La medaglia raffigurata si accompagna a quelle degli imperatori presenti nel frontespizio. Le iscrizioni, frammentarie, furono rinvenute nel 1547 e collocate da Michelangelo in una cornice architettonica, da lui disegnata, in Campidoglio. L’opera, lavoro minore del Piranesi, fu completata nel 1761 e venne alla luce l’anno successivo., riproducendo le iscrizione secondo la collocazione michelangiolesca. Come nei precedenti lavori l’artista non si limita al lavoro di riproduzione rappresentando i blocchi non inseriti nella parete, ma come se fossero appoggiati a mensole o sostenuti da grappe, in modo da restituire loro quella tridimensionalità che gli appartiene, soffermandosi sulle lacune, sulle rotture e sulle scalpellature, presentandoli come rovine e come frammenti di un antico contesto perduto. The medal that can be seen is associated with the ones depicting emperors on the title-page. Lapides Capitolini A list of Roman magistrates from the times of the monarchy until the end of the reign of Augustus was sculpted on marble and fixed on a wall at the Roman Forum by mandate of the Roman historian Valerius Flaccus. These inscriptions were uncovered in fragmentary conditions in 1547 and placed at the Capitol, within an architectural setting of his own design, by Michelangelo. This minor work by Piranesi was finished in 1761 and published the following year, depicting the inscriptions in conformity with Michelangelo's arrangement. Furthermore, as in his earlier works, the artist did not restrict himself to simple duplication and depicted the plaques not as in reality, inserted into a wall, but representing them as if leaning on corbels or supported by clamps, therefore restoring an impression of their three-dimensionality, drawing attention on empty spaces, damaged sections, and chisel-marks, displaying them as ruins and fragments of an ancient and lost environment.
