Karel Dujardin è stato un pittore, disegnatore ed incisore del barocco olandese, nato ad Amsterdam nel 1626 dal pittore Dujardin Guillian. La sua prima formazione avviene dall'artista Nicolaes Berchem che lascia un segno importante nella sua arte. Nel 1642 si sposta in Italia per stabilirsi a Roma, dove entra a far parte del gruppo di pittori della Bentvueghels, una società di artisti per lo più olandesi e fiamminghi attivi a Roma dal 1620 circa al 1720. Durante questo periodo si fa chiamare "Bokkebaart". Dopo il viaggio in Italia, dal 1652 fino al 1674, lavora ad Amsterdam, in Francia e a L'Aia. Nel 1675, invitato dal suo grande amico Joan Renst, torna a Roma. Per tre anni si dedica insieme all'amico a girare la penisola per trasferirsi poi a Venezia. Dipinge soggetti mitologici, allegorici e religiosi, soprattutto sulla vita di San Paolo, scene di genere, e ritratti eccellenti. Il Dujardin è noto soprattutto come “bambocciante”, ovvero come pittore di tematiche naturali e animali, ma è stimato per lo più come paesaggista, genere nel quale si ispirò dapprima al Berchem e poi al Paulus Potter. Fu apprezzato anche come ritrattista di singole persone o di gruppi. La sua attività di incisore fu fervente e ricalcò i temi già intrapresi in pittura. Etching, 1652, signed in plate at upper left. Karel Dujardin was a painter, draftsman and engraver of the Dutch Baroque, born in Amsterdam in 1626 to the painter Dujardin Guillian. His first training was from the artist Nicolaes Berchem who left an important mark on his art. In 1642 he moved to Italy to settle in Rome, where he joined the group of painters of the Bentvueghels, a society of mostly Dutch and Flemish artists active in Rome from about 1620 to 1720. During this period he calls himself "Bokkebaart". After his trip to Italy, from 1652 until 1674, he worked in Amsterdam, France and The Hague. In 1675, invited by his great friend Joan Renst, he returns to Rome. For three years he devoted himself together with his friend to travel the peninsula and then moved to Venice. He paints mythological, allegorical and religious subjects, especially on the life of St. Paul, genre scenes, and excellent portraits. The Dujardin is known above all like "bambocciante", that is like painter of natural thematic and animals, but it is esteemed mostly like landscape painter, genre in which it was inspired at first to the Berchem and then to the Paulus Potter.
