Esemplare nel settimo stato di nove, oppure ottavo di dieci, pubblicato da L'Artiste. Molto buono lo stato di conservazione. Dalla serie Eaux-fortes sur Paris di Charles Meryon, formata da 22 acqueforti pubblicate dall'artista in tre parti tra il 1852 e il 1854. La demolizione della pompa dell’acqua del ponte di Notre-Dame, ordinata dal governo municipale di Parigi nel 1851, incoraggiò Meryon a scegliere la vecchia struttura come soggetto per la sua acquaforte l'anno successivo. Come parte del piano istituito dall'imperatore Napoleone III per migliorare le infrastrutture della città, il sistema di approvvigionamento idrico fu revisionato, rendendo questa pompa del XVII secolo superata. Meryon scrisse nel 1853 del suo rammarico per la sua distruzione, perché la pompa era stata una "cosa insolita e curiosa" in una città che stava diventando "sempre più regolare". Entrato giovanissimo in marina, Charles Meryon (Parigi 1821 - Charenton 1868) fece grandi viaggi riportandone impressioni e disegni. Dal 1849 si dedicò all'incisione, introdotto alla tecnica da E. Bléry. Le Eaux-fortes sur Paris (tre serie, 1852-54) sono il suo capolavoro per compiutezza tecnica e per l'intensa interpretazione poetica del soggetto; i cieli delle sue vedute sono popolate, a volte, di figure chimeriche. Amico di Charles Baudelaire, che ne esaltò la potenza drammatica, visse poveramente e nel 1858 fu internato in manicomio. Very good condition. From the series 'Eaux-fortes sur Paris' by Charles Meryon, a series of 22 etchings published by the artist in three parts between 1852 and 1854. The demolition of the water pump on the Notre-Dame bridge, ordered by the Paris municipal government in 1851, encouraged Meryon to select the old structure as a subject for his etching the following year. As part of the plan instituted by Emperor Napoleon III to improve city infrastructure, the water supply system was overhauled, rendering this seventeenth-century pump defunct. Meryon wrote in 1853 of his regret for its destruction, because the pump had been an "unusual and curious thing" in a city that was becoming "more and more regular." A pioneering master of original etching in France, Charles Meryon (Parigi 1821 - Charenton 1868) was a solitary and disturbed genius of great creative power. He was described by the leading figure of the British Etching Revival, Sir Francis Seymour Haden, as "undoubtedly one of the greatest artists on copper that the world has produced" - no etcher could wish for greater praise. Indeed, the sincerest form of flattery, that of imitation, has been displayed of Charles Meryon's etchings more than of almost any other artist excepting Rembrandt.
