Nova Delineatio Totius Orbis Terrarum per Petrum Vander AA

Bell'esemplare dell'edizione di Van der Aa della rarissima e imponente carta del mondo a doppio emisfero di Arnold Colom, con figure mitologiche abbellite che rappresentano il fuoco, l'aria, il giorno e la notte contrapposte ai cieli e alla terra, l'acqua ai paesaggi terrestri e marini. Pubblicata originariamente da Jacob van Meurs nel 1660, e qui riedita da Van der Aa, questa carta si basa sulla splendida mappa grafica di Arnold Colom, del primo atlante marittimo del mondo. La California è un'isola, separata dalla Nova Albion, che si estende verso l'Asia e fuori dalla mappa. La costa occidentale della Nuova Zelanda appare, così come diverse altre importanti isole del Pacifico. L'Australia è parzialmente mappata e compare solo la punta meridionale della Tasmania. Ciascun emisfero è corredato da un cartiglio, uno dei quali reca il titolo. Superbe incisioni circondano la mappa con rappresentazioni degli dei Apollo e sua sorella Diana che rappresentano il giorno e la notte con quattro allegorie femminili degli elementi Fuoco, Aria, Acqua e Terra. La carta fu pubblicata per la prima volta da J. Gottfried con il titolo olandese Niewe Werelt Caart e fu riedita da Pieter Vander Aa con il titolo francese Nouveau Carte Du Monde, reinciso nel cartiglio inferiore. Pieter van der Aa (1659-1733) fu un cartografo ed editore olandese che stampò edizioni pirata dei più importanti libri illustrati, ma è noto soprattutto per la sua voluminosa produzione di mappe e atlanti. ' California is an island, separated from ' Nova Albion, which stretches towards Asia and off the map. The western coast of New Zealand appears, as do several other important Pacific islands. Australia is partially mapped and only the southern tip of Tasmania appears. Each hemisphere includes a strap work cartouche, one with the title. Superb engravings surround the map with representations of the gods Apollo and his sister Diana representing day and night with four female allegories of the elements of Fire, Air, Water and Earth. The map was first published by J. Gottfried with the Dutch title ' Niewe Werelt Caart and was reissued by Pieter Vander Aa with his own imprint and the French title Nouveau Carte Du Monde re-engraved in the lower cartouche. Pieter van der Aa (1659-1733) was a Dutch mapmaker and publisher who printed pirated editions of foreign bestsellers and illustrated books but is best known for his voluminous output of maps and atlases. Van der ' Aa was born to a German stonecutter from Holstein. Interestingly, all three van der Aa sons came to be involved in the printing business.
