'In short, W. has worked a minor miracle: in a commentary averaging ten pages per book, W. gets in more intelligently chosen and lucidly expressed information, appealing to a wider audience (learner and scholer alike), than any commentary I can think of. I highlight some particularlu good features: the rich spread of undogmatic and penetrating philological, literary, historical and geographical comment; the firm grip W. keeps on the story line and the connections between one part of the text and another; the sensible help given to comparative beginners; and the judicious asides which point the scholar in the direction of neo-analytical German scholarship.
