8vo., Fourth Edition; neat inscription on blank preliminary; handsomely bound in late nineteenth century full roan, sides with elaborate double frame border enclosing florets all in blind, back with five raised bands tooled in blind, second compartment with red leather label lettered and ruled in gilt, all other compartments tooled in gilt, doublures tooled in blind, red edges, marbled endpapers BY CLYDE OF NEWMAN STREET, covers lightly rubbed and chafed at extremities else a most attractive copy. SIGNED BY THE BINDER ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER VERSO. First published in 1840 from a series of monthly articles, Hook's dictionary was an immediate success and remained in vogue throughout the century. A much abridged fifteenth edition appeared in 1897.
