Manners and Customs of the Modern Egyptians (1836) è il risultato dei suoi appunti raccolti negli anni vissuti in Egitto, dal 1833 al 1835 dopo un soggiorno di quattro anni, (dal 1825 a soli ventanni o poco più). Visse esclusivamente nelle zone musulmane del Cairo, e ben presto parlò correntemente l'arabo, e si potè muovere liberamente ed è per questo che il suo resoconto è dettagliato e prezioso.
