Descrizione

8vo, [2], x, 88pp., contemporary ink inscription from the editor J. Payne to Samuel Salter (classical scholar and master of Charterhouse, blank margin of title shortened (not effecting text), renewed endpapers, recent calf-backed boards, uncut. Rare history, largely translated from the Portuguese by Ovington, who begins with his own story of two fugitive English lovers who, after discovering the island, were shipwrecked and enslaved in Morocco where they related their account to a fellow Portuguese prisoner. The bulk of the history is variously attributed to Francisco Alcoforado or Francisco Manuel de Mello as being a translation of the third part of the latterís Epan·foras de v·ria histÛria portuguesa. The original account of the Portuguese discovery of Madeira was written by Alcoforado and this was latter published by Mello.
