Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - sehr guter Zustand / perfect condition - PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION. SAVE for a few verbal changes, this edition is a reprint of the first, which was published in 1896. It is difficult to put new cloth into an old garment. Our opinions may hold fast; yet the mystery of things deepens as the shadows lengthen with us; and we do not speak at one time of life as at another. Any revision of the present work might have impaired the equal temper and conviction which seem to me to give it unity. -- Ancient Ideals was intended to set forth human growth. The archaeological data of the first six chapters were subordinate. They are still substantially sound; except that the chapter on Greek Beginnings makes no reference to Crete. Yet I think the chapter suggests correctly the manner in which the Hellenic race gradually became itself. The recent Cretan discoveries serve to carry this inchoate Hellenic story back many centuries and further illuminate it.
