Descrizione

London, Religious Tract Society, 1866. 4to (26.8 x 18.0 cm). Five pp.; one fine, chromolithographed plate, two wood-engravings. Later printed boards with cloth spine cover. = Published in The Leisure Hour, a Victorian monthly (pp. 520-524). Prededating the author's famous Ascent of the Matterhorn. At 4122 m (13,525 ft), the Aiguille verte, or Green Needle, is one of the tallest mountains in the Alps. "It was first climbed on 29 June 1865 by Edward Whymper, Christian Almer and Franz Biner, a fortnight before the fateful first ascent of the Matterhorn. Whymper was unable to climb with his usual guide, Michel Croz, who had to wait for a client in Chamonix. As a result, Whymper hired the services of Christian Almer, who had been with Alfred Wills on the Wetterhorn in 1854." (Wikipedia). Old repairs to the plate, otherwise a very good copy.
