A WONDERFUL RELIC OF THE CLOSE FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN TWO TOWERING SOUTHERN FRENCH LITERARY FIGURES OF THE FIN DE SIECLE, FREDERIC MISTRAL (1830-1914, who wrote in Provençal) AND ALPHONSE DAUDET (1840-1897, who wrote in French.) Four pages on two conjugate leaves, about 400 words. In French, with a few words and phrases in Provençal. In this very affectionate letter, Mistral offers a long and glowing review of "Tartarin sur les Alpes", and then thanks Daudet for the article had written about Mistral in "The Century Illustrated", which Mistral has yet to have translated from English. Mistral closes the letter with affectionate wishes for all (including Léon, naurally.) Mistral went on the win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1904, and to this day is one of only two winners awarded the prize for writing in a stateless language (the other being Isaac Bashevis Singer.) An absolutely matchless literary letter.
