Presentation plate (1865) on front end paper. Foxing to end papers and a few page margins. No other marks or inscriptions. No creasing to covers or to spine. A clean very tight copy with unmarked boards, well-rubbed edges and corners and frail top of spine. Raised gilt bands down spine with one portion of gilt surface embossing missing Marbled boards and green leather spine and corners. Marbled end papers. Volumes I & II in one volume. 291 plus 298pp. The classic account of Johnson's work and studies, conversations and letters. Illustrated throughout. Cover page dated 1859 but each volume dated 1865.
