Königsberg, Gebrüdern Bornträger, 1853. 4to (26.5 x 20.0 cm). x, 118 pp., four lithograped plates with 81 engravings. 19th-century ruled half cloth over marbled boards. Paper label with script title on the spine. = In this work the German physician Gotthard August Ferdinand Kleber (1816-1871) claims to have observed the entry of a spermatozoon into an egg. He was one of several scientists who might have been the first to observe actual fertilisation. The title is double, in Latin and in German. The text is bilingual too. Boards worn at edges, spine cover chipped at extremities. Bookplate on the front pastedown, old, private owner's signature and later stamp on the front free endpaper recto with small perforated stamp on second title page and small stamp on verso of plates. Not in Cat. BM(NH).
