Descrizione

Leipzig, Gustav Fischer, 1893. 8vo (23.1 x 16.0 cm). iv, 96 pp. Original printed wrappers. = August Friedrich Leopold Weismann (1834-1914) was a German evolutionary biologist. Ernst Mayr ranked him as the second most notable evolutionary theorist of the 19th century, after Charles Darwin. This work forms part of a polemic between Weismann and the British polymath Herbert Spencer (1820-1903), the man who coined the phrase "survival of the fittest", adapted by Charles Darwin and later the source of much misunderstanding about Darwin's theory of natural selection. With, on the front wrapper, the small stamp of the Dutch zoologist and malacologist Rutgerus Horst (1849-1930). Wrapper detached; wrappers and last text page with some creasing and a few, short, marginal tears, otherwise a very good copy. Rare.
