Berlin, J. F. Starcke, 1885. 8vo (22.0 x 13.6 cm). 57 pp.; one text engraving, large folded map of Iceland, three steel-engravings after photos. Slightly later cloth with gilt lines and title on the spine. = Rare thesis on the geology of west Iceland. In 1883 the author spent four months on Iceland in the company of another German geologist, Konrad Keilhack, who published on the phyto-palaeontology of the island, whereas Schmidt made a special study of the island's Liparite. Liparite is “an effusive rock similar in chemical composition to granite. The term “rhyolite” is [an often used synonym]. Liparite occurs as lava flows, volcanic domes, cinereous deposits, and ignimbrite strata. It generally exhibits a high glass content, but nearly holocrystalline varieties are also known to exist; it often contains porphyritic phenocrysts. Liparite occurs widely in all volcanic regions of the world; it is used for paving roads and for construction purposes” (vide thefreedictionary website). Faint old stamp in title page lower margin, two other stamps on the front paste-down, and front free endpaper, otherwise a very good, clean copy.
