Halae [Halle an der Saale], Schimmelpfennig, 1810. Square 4to (19.7 x 16.7 cm). 52 pp. Contemporary marbled boards. = These are the theses of the entomologist Ernest Friderich Germar (1786-1853), dealing with the large moth genus Bombyx. According to Horn-Schenkling, "Selten", which may be regarded as an understatement: we have noted only two copies for sale in the last 20 years. Horn-Schenkling's dating of 1812 for the second thesis seems to be incorrect. One of his propositions (theses) is: "spiders are not insects", which might have been a novel idea at that time. The title page of the first dissertation has a tiny book label, the second dissertation a small stamp of the German senator and entomologist Carl von Heyden (1793-1866). Pages lightly spotted, the last leaves age-toned, otherwise a good copy. Horn-Schenkling, 7559.
