Dr. Charles Snodgrass Ryan: A former Ottoman officer among the Anzacs.= Dr. Charles Snodgrass Ryan: Anzaklar arasinda eski bir Osmanli subayi. He began his medical education in Australia and completed it in Scotland. Afterwards, he served as a surgeon with the rank of Captain in the Ottoman army for nearly two years. He participated in the 1877-1878 Russo-Ottoman wars with the Ottoman army. Her served on both fronts of these wars, in Plevna and in Erzurum. He was wounded in Plevna and became seriously ill because of typhus in Erzurum and was taken captive by the Russian army. He was awarded the Medal of Plevna War and also Osmaniye and Mecidiye decorations by the Ottoman government. After returning to his own country in 1878, he maintained his relations and ties with the Ottoman Empire and served as Honorary Consul of the Ottoman Empire for nearly thirty years in Melbourne. He related his Plevna and Erzurum memories to his friends for years and spoke with admiration about the Turks. Therefore, he was called "Turkish Charlie" and "Plevna Ryan" by his close friends. He wrote a book recounting his memories, while serving the Ottoman Empire between 1876-1878, called Under the Red Crescent. He was rewarded for his Melbourne consulate service on behalf of the Ottoman Empire and he was given the second degree mecidiye decoration by the Ottoman government.
