Jocelyn's Tragedies of Ennius Edward Courtney's collected miscellaneous poems in The fragmentary Latin poets (1993, 2. Aufl. 2003) und vor allem OttoSkutschs monumentale The Annals of Q. Ennius (1985).1 Werner Suerbaum hat uns einen radikal aktualisierten �erblick �ber die Geschichte der r�mischen archaischen Literatur (2002a)2 und eine umfassende Ennius-Bibliographie f�r das zwanzigste Jahrhundert (2003) geliefert. Dank dieser Ressourcen ist Ennius triumphierend in den Mainstream der Lateinstudien zur�ckgekehrt. Und es gibt noch mehr zu feiern. In den letzten drei�g Jahren haben neue Str�mungen in unserem Fach uns veranlasst, die alten Stereotypen skeptisch zu betrachten, und haben den Dichter, den wir einst kannten, v�llig ver�ert. Ennius, das wollige Mammut oder der haarige Primitive, wurde als Innovator an der Kreuzung von griechischer, r�mischer und italienischer Kultur wiedergeboren: der erste Dichter, der sich entschied, das Epos in lateinischen Hexametern zu schreiben, ein selbstbewusster K�nstler, der Erfinder der r�mischen Geschichte, ein �ertr�r hellenistischer (nicht nur homerischer) Tropen auf die r�mische politische und rituelle Sprache und lateinischer Etymologien auf griechische Mythen. Ennius' Nachleben, in der Antike und dar�ber hinaus, hat sich weit �ber Eduard Nordens Klassiker Ennius und Vergilius (1915) hinaus ausgedehnt, vor allem dank Suerbaums Studien �ber Ennius und Petrarca (1972a und 1972b) und Herbert Prinzen's wichtigem Ennius im Urteil derAntike (1998). Wir begr��n auch eine neue Aufsatzsammlung, Ennius and the invention of Roman epic, herausgegeben von Brian Breed und Andreola Rossi (2006), die aus ihrem Panel �ber Ennius bei der Tagung der American Philological Association 2004 hervorgegangen ist. / Content: The papers in this volume were originally offered as a toast to Q. Ennius at a Laurence Seminar, �Ennius perennis: revolutionary and figurehead�, organized by the editors of this volume in Cambridge in June 2005. The sanctified father of Latin literature is enjoying a particularly vital moment in his immortality. We are better equipped than ever before to read the fragments, owing to a series of fine scholarly editions: H. D. Jocelyn�s Tragedies of Ennius Edward Courtney�s collected miscellaneous poems in The fragmentary Latin poets (1993,2nd ed. 2003) and above all OttoSkutsch�s monumental The Annals of Q. Ennius (1985).1 Werner Suerbaum has provided us with a radically updated overview of the history of Roman archaic literature (2002a)2 and a comprehensive Ennius bibliography for the twentieth century (2003). Thanks to these resources, Ennius has reentered the mainstream of Latin studies triumphant. And there is more to celebrate. In the last thirty years new currents in our subject have caused us to look sceptically at the old stereotypes and have wholly transformed the poet we once knew. Ennius the woolly mammoth or hairy primitive has been reborn as an innovator at the crossroads of Greek, Roman and native Italian culture: the first poet to choose to write epic in Latin hexameters, a self-conscious artist, the inventor of Roman history, a grafter of Hellenistic (not just Homeric) tropes onto Roman political and ritual language and of Latin etymologies on to Greek myths. Ennius� afterlife, in antiquity and beyond, has extended well beyond Eduard Norden�s classic Ennius und Vergilius (1915), thanks especially to Suerbaum�s studies of Ennius and Petrarch (1972a and 1972b) and Herbert Prinzen�s important Ennius im Urteil derAntike (1998). We welcome, too, a new collection of essays, Ennius and the invention of Roman epic, edited by Brian Breed and Andreola Rossi (2006) and bom out of their panel on Ennius at the 2004 meeting of the American Philological Association.
