Descrizione

XII, 211 pp.; 290 pp., 1 leaf (text); 191 plates in outline engraving showing c. 800 antique monuments, reliefs, statues, medallions, vase paintings, etc. Contemp. half calf, spines with 2 labels (somewhat rubbed). With ms. exlibris Gaspard Schinz. Paris, Soyer, 1811. A detailed work dedicated to the history of art, especially archaeology with regard to mythology, the "connoissance de l'antiquité figurée" (preface). In the present copy, the texts of vols. I and II with both explanations to the plates are bound together, and all plates are bound in a separate volume. Aubin-Louis Millin (1759-1818) was "conservateur des médailles de la bibliothèque impériale" in Paris. A member of many learned societies all over Europe, he was also connected to the society of physical sciences in Zurich which would explain the fact that his work was owned by Gaspar Schinz (presumably the painter Johann Caspar Schinz, 1797-1832 from Zurich). A German edition in 1820, and a new ed. in 1848, and a "Nouvelle galerie" in 1841 testify to the work's popularity. - Plates somewhat cropped. - Quérard, La France littéraire, VI, 137; Hoefer XXXV, 541; Graesse IV, 527.
