Red cloth with gilt title on spine and front board. = This important study, part of the monumental work on Cuban (natural) history by Ramon de la Sagra, contains several of the first scientific descriptions of the Foraminifera found in the Caribbean, especially around Cuba. Orbigny (1802-1857), one of the leading French biologists, paleontologists and geologists, traveled extensively in South America, the Caribbean and Europe, making major contributions to our knowledge of the geology and paleontology of these regions. He introduced the concept of stages and zones to stratigraphy and attempted the first subdivision of the Jurassic and Cretaceous based on invertebrate fossils, including Foraminifera. This is a facsimile edition, with the plates, originally published in folio, uncoloured and folded. A good clean copy, nearly "as new".
