Each chapter explores how Central Africans from the individual regions of the northern and southern savanna, from the rain forest, the Indian Ocean zone and the Zimbabwe plateau, experimented with new technology in traditional crafts, with economies based on fishing, (arming and commerce, with social and political organisation and with innovations in religious worship. It is a history both rich and varied which provides illuminating contrasts and parallels with the histories of both West Africa and East Africa. . The unity of historical experience was in some ways broken in the four-way partition by the colonial powers, but the authors demonstrate that the policies adopted by the main colonisers share a surprising degree of uniformity; this common heritage enables Central Africa's twentieth-century history, through to independence and beyond, to be seen as an integrated whole rather than as a duster of local experiences. .
