Hafniae [Copenhagen], Christian Steen, 1835. 8vo (23.9 x 15.2 cm). viii pp.; 111 engraved plates. Near contemporary blind boards. = A seldom seen systematical arrangement of the mammals with fine engravings. ten by the Danish zoologist and schoolmaster Frederik Christian Kielsen (1774-1850). Most illustrations are quite accurate, a few are rather naive. On plate 23 is Nieuhof's Animal Javanicum (figured in Nieuhof's Zee- en Lantreize, p. 293), a double-horned beast, somewhat similar to the babirussa and probably indicating this animal from the Sunda islands, which existance, however, was doubted by Kielsen. The namings are based on Blumenbach and the 13th edition of Linnaeus (i.e. the Gmelin edition). The last three plates are anthropological. There are two title pages, with slightly different titles, as noted above. Probably this was done because the book was sold separately, and as part of series, together with similar works on birds, fish, insects, etc. All are rare. We found only one auction record (of a whole series) in the last 50 years. Tiny former owner's inscription in an old hand on the front pastedown and small, circular blind stamp in the lower margin of the first title. Spine cover lost, but binding strong. Weak, marginal damp-stain to inner top and bottom margin of the text pages. Most plates in a good condition, however, the last three - issued on somewhat different paper - a bit foxed in the margins. In all a very good copy. Nissen ZBI, 2182.
