John Bullard -- Introduction: Cherye and Jim Pierce -- A Few Photographs from the Pierce Collection: Robert Becker -- Plates -- Exhibition Checklist. Klappentext: In Celebration of Light accompanies a major-exhibition of photography featuring the Pierce Collection, organized by the Honolulu Academy of Arts. The collection is a tribute to the work of European and American master photographers of the twentieth century. As a whole, the collection is imbued with a remarkably coherent spirit, and reveals the minds and hearts of the collectors themselves. Its bold and eclectic range acknowledges the dynamic power of this medium, and, the Pierces ' intense intellectual curiosity. From the Foreword by E. John Bullard: It was only thirty years ago that photography first gained widespread recognition as a fine art, with the activities of a few pioneer dealers, private collectors, and museum curators In 1970 there were only a few museums with a serious commitment to photography, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the George Eastman House in Rochester being the most prominent. There were only a handful of galleries devoted exclusively to photography then, such as the Lee Witkin Gallery and the Light Gallery in New York and the Harry Lunn Gallery in Washington, D.C. These were soon followed by G. Ray Hawkins in Los Angeles, Tom Halstead in Michigan, Gerhard Sander in Washington, D.C., and Joshua Mann Pailet in New Orleans. . . . Cherye and Jim Pierce were members of the pioneering group of collectors in the 1970s who became passionately addicted to photography, buying their first images soon after their marriage in 1973. They joined a small but dedicated group - including, most famously, Sam Wagslaff. Paul Walther, and Arnold Crane - who helped bring long-overdue public recognition to an art medium that already had a rich history dating back over 135 years. It was an exciting time. There were so many discoveries to be made, reputations to be revived, histories to be written, and young photographers to be encouraged and patronized. ISBN 9780937426623
