A SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY, ONE OF ONLY FIVE COPIES ON IMPERIAL JAPANESE PAPER OF THE FIRST EDITION OF THE PLAY THAT MADE BERNSTEIN FAMOUS, WITH A SIGNED AUTOGRAPH LETTER FROM THE AUTHOR. Henry Bernstein was perhaps the best-known Franco-Jewish playwright of the early 20th century, and "Le voleur" is his best-known play. This copy with a signed presentation inscription from Bernstein to littérateur Xavier Roux. FROM A LARGE-PAPER EDITION LIMITED TO ONLY 15 COPIES, THIS IS ONE OF ONLY FIVE ON IMPERIAL JAPANESE PAPER (there were also 10 on Dutch laid paper). LAID IN IS A TWO-PAGE (front and back) AUTOGRAPH LETTER FROM BERNSTEIN, signed in full, about 200 words, relating to a dispute with an actress. 8vo. Beautifully bound in contemporary half morocco and decorated boards. Top edge gilt, other edges uncut. Original wraps preserved. Minimal traces of wear to extremities of binding, else FINE AND BRIGHT. The letter is in perfect condition, on fine wove stationery with Bernstein's "157, Boulevard Haussmann" letterhead.
