Descrizione

Wien, Carl Gerold, 1836-1839. Two volumes in two. 8vo (20.8 x 13.3 cm). 1321 pp. [xxx, 525; xxii, 744]; 62 [31; 31] engraved plates. Uniform contemporary black morocco over black boards. Spines with gilt lines and title. Edges red. = A very nicely bound set of the second (and final) edition of this work. The first, 1832 edition only had eight plates. In 1812 the author, the German geologist and mineralogist Friedrich Mohs (1773-1839) created the Mohs scale of mineral hardness characterizes the scratch resistance of various minerals through the ability of a harder material, with a higher number, to scratch a softer material, with a lower number, varying on a scale from 1 (graphite) to 10 (diamond). This work forms a complete study of the minerals, not only dealing with their hardness, but also with their colour, shape, compositions, and various other properties. The second part, published in the year of Mohs' death, was edited by the Austrian geologist and mineralogist Franz Xaver Maximilian Zippe (1791-1863). Small old owner's inscription on the front pastedowns, light spotting to a few pages, plates clean. A very good set. Cat. BM(NH) p. 1332.
