Orissa, under Gajapati Sovereigns, spanned from the Ganges to Godavari, divided by the Eastern Ghats. The Maritime Division featured fertile lands and Zemindaries, the Subalpine region covered hills and valleys, while the Alpine Region housed races like the Khonds. Zemindaries, existing for twelve centuries, were acquired through conquest, not sovereign patronage. Despite theoretical allegiance, Zemindars, titled Rajahs, wielded near-independent sovereignty.
