Although he is thoroughly a member of his profession, he does not practice an art whose primary reference is to art world itself, to the context of historical avantgardism, or to specialty issues pertaining to art alone. He does not worry about being modern, he worries about being true; because of his engagement with the conditions and concerns of his time he is by definition a man of his times, and modern therefore but not because of a separate ideological art."
