This Convivio volume was designed by Czeslaw Jan Grycz in close
collaboration with Libero Casagrande and Pieraldo Vola. The Latin
text follows William S. Anderson's Teubner edition of the Meta-
morphoses (2nd edition, Leipzig, 1982), except for: " diffundi" in I,
36; "depositique metus" in v, 363; and "varios" in V, 390 (which
follow Ehwald's 1915 Teubner text); and "ignes" in V, 389; "sum tibi
fida" in XIII, 748; and "vereor" in XIII, 858 (which follow N. Heinsius'
text). The type was set by the Istituto Grafico Casagrande of Bel-
linzona in Monotype Bembo Series 270. The Roman type of that
series is a modern descendant of the typeface used by Aldo Manuzio for
Pietro Bembo's De Aetna in 1495, while the Italic is much indebted to
the Venetian calligrapher, Giovannantonio Tagliente. The color-plates
were prepared and printed in an offset edition with the text by Pieraldo
Editore at the i.g.e.r. in Rome. Of that edition, 350 copies were
reserved for the Associates of the University of California Press.
A limited, signed edition in letterpress, using the tipped-in, offset
color-plates of Pieraldo Editore, was produced by Edizioni Casagrande
for the presentation of this volume and the Ovidiane sequence of
paintings at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Gibellina in May,
1986. The paper used for printing the color-plates is Bilux Extra of the
Cartiera Sottrici; the paper for the offset edition of the text is Grifo
Velina of the Cartiera Fabriano; and for the letterpress edition, the
paper is Arches of the Papeterie Arjomari at Arches in the Vosges.
