About The Book: The Quit India Movement sought to demand an immediate end to British rule in India in order to achieve full independence. The slogan “Quit India” became a rallying cry for the movement, symbolising the demand for the British to leave India. The Quit India movement was the spontaneous participation of the masses compared to the other Gandhian movements like non-cooperation and civil disobedience. The great significance of this historic movement was that it placed the demand for independence on the immediate agenda of the national movement. The Congress Working Committee on July 14, 1942, in a resolution demanding withdrawal of the British power from India, said: "Should this appeal fail, the Congress cannot view without the gravest apprehension the continuation of the present state of affairs involving a progressive deterioration of the situation and the weakening of India's will and power to resist aggression. The Congress will then be reluctantly compelled to utilise all the non-violent strength it might have gathered since 1920 for the vindication of political rights and liberty. Such a widespread struggle would inevitably be under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi." The All India Congress Committee meeting at Bombay on August 8, 1942, while approving of and endorsing the resolution of the Working Committee, expressed the opinion that "events subsequent to it have given it further justification and have made it clear that immediate ending of British rule in India is an urgent necessity. With the immediate causes being the failure of Cripps mission, hardships caused during World War II and the Japanese knocking at the doors of Indian borders.
