Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Akzeptabler Zustand, Einband sichtlich berieben und beston, stellenweise leicht gerissen. Schmutztitel mit Stempelaufdruck / Acceptable condition, binding visibly rubbed and scuffed, slightly torn in places. Half title with stamp imprint. - INTRODUCTION My desire is to present in this book a philological analysis of a number of closely connected philosophical terms in Sextus* works and draw some conclusions. As this approach is new I have no recourse to other authors works, whose importance for the philosophical interpretation of Sextus is undoubted (for example studies of Mates, De Lacy, J. Grenier, Dumont, etc. and the excellent monograph of M. del Pra, Lo Scetticismo Greco). On the contrary, as Sextus and scepticism in general excite primarily a philosophical interest, my contribution is but a precondition for a more penetrating insight on the part of historians of Greek philosophy. As for the relative chronology of Sextus books and his effort for an improved style, my main aids were my Prolegomena to Sextus Empiricus (1948) and Indices (1962); as concerns the text, I follow the edition of Mutschmann ameliorated by Mau (PH, ? IVI).
