Second edition, [2], xiii, [3], 121, [1] + 12pp., of publishers adverts, with half-title, engraved hand-coloured frontispiece and 16 engraved plates, several aquatint, most hand-coloured or tinted, woodcut plate foxed as usual), others bright and clean, 58 hand-colour guides to the theory of colour, wood-engraved illustrations, some occasional spotting, later half morocco in an Art Nouveau style, extremities lightly rubbed. A scarce and comprehensive guide for aspiring artists of the time. It aimed to teach the foundational techniques of drawing across a wide range of subjects and styles: Figure drawing; Landscape; Architectural drawing; Still life & Classical sculpture studies. Provenance: Small neat circular stamp of the Birmingham Assay Office to front dree-endpaper. Tooley, 459 ( first edition of 1825).
