From the Introduction: In giving examples of historical knights and of chivalric literature, I have tried to let the works concerned speak for themselves, so that the reader can form his own impressions based on material as close to the original as possible. Many biographies, anecdotes, poems, and short tales are translated in full, while long prose romances and dramatic works are generally summarized. In no case have I attempted to retell the story in "modern" fashion to make it more interesting, or to alter details that might offend Western sensibility so as to render them more palatable, for this is intended to be an objective study.
