Descrizione
8vo., First Edition thus, with double-page map; handsomely bound in navy blue full morocco, sides with frame border, back with raised bands, second compartment lettered in gilt, all other compartments tooled in gilt, fore-edges lightly mottled else a most attractive copy ideal as a gift or for presentation. This edition was published simultaneously (September 1951) with the first edition. It is now scarce in its own right. The finest novel of the Royal Navy in WWII and a maritime classic. The story, based upon the author's own experiences, formed the basis of Charles Frend's notable feature film starring Jack Hawkins in one of his most memorable roles. So accurate is its depiction of the Battle of the Atlantic that it is one of the very few works of fiction admitted by Law to his standard bibliography The Royal Navy in World War Two. Law, 1865 (recording the first edition).
