Tring, Zoological Museum Tring. 1894. 4to (28.5 x 19.5 cm). 38 pp., two tissue-guarded plates of which one a hand-coloured lithograph by J. Smit. Disbound. = Major (no pun intended) contribution to the knowledge of the lemurs by Charles Immanuel Forsyth Major (1843-1923), a Swiss zoologist and vertebrate palaeontologist of Glaswegian descent. In this paper, two new dwarf maki's are finely illustrated by the famous Dutch artist, Joseph Smit (1836-1929) who also worked for the Zoological Society of London. Perhaps it was this material that convinced Major to join an expedition to Madagascar. He left the same year and stayed until 1896, collecting much new material that lead to the description of many more new lemurs. This paper is extracted from the Novitates Zoologicae, being the very first paper published in that Series, started and funded by Rotschild, and preceded by the Journal's "Note of the editors" with the latter's view on taxonomy and speciation. A very good, clean copy.
