Descrizione

An early adaptation for children of Stowe's famous antislavery narrative, published as part of The Pleasant Hour Series. With six colourplates by Hugo Von Hofsen. 8vo, in the publisher's original gray boards, the upper cover ruled and lettered in white and with a large colour pastedown of Topsy Von Hofsen, and with pictorial endpapers printed in green and featuring reading children. 46 pp. Very well preserved, the text and plates all quite fine, fresh and clean, a little mellowing to the binding and minor rubbing to the white ruled frame.

Edizione: arguably the most important american novel of all time rewritten for children. in what must be one of the greatest abridgments of all time, stowe's monumental 634 page masterpiece has been reduced to 46 pages! mary e. blaine is cited as the adapter of most other titles in the series listed on worldcat, but it is almost certain that this adaptation was actually the work of british children's book writer/adapter henrietta elizabeth marshall. the treatment minimizes the religious aspects of tom's story.
