Il testo fu la prima biografia di Gesù che accettava la sua esistenza storica mentre rifiutava la credenza cristiana secondo la quale fosse il figlio di Dio e che facesse miracoli. L'opera venne considerata blasfema dalla Chiesa e la sua diffusione venne considerata un pericolo per la fede.
