Descrizione
A unique example of this important original art form. Each painting is roughly 6 by 6 inches including the borders and is accomplished in beautiful earthy tones of reds, browns, umbers, blue, black and green and with short captions or inscriptions worked into the images. Approximately 60 inches long by 6 inches tall, folded in segments in a manner which allows it to be viewed either much like a conventional book or unfolded flat to reveal the entire work at once. Painted on one side of a thick heavy leather parchment in multiple sections joined together. A very attractive picture book with some expected rubbing, minor edge wear or mellowing.
Anno di pubblicazione: Late 19th or Early 20th Century
Edizione: unusual ethiopian manuscript. ten new testament scenes vividly depicted in traditional style. although probably created in the 20th century, it represents a style and artistic tradition many centuries old. the purpose of these large format pictures books in ethiopian culture is not entirely understood, but the vivid depictions accompanied by such a small amount of text clearly indicate they are meant to be a visual aid to devotion. among the new testament scenes in this example are st. george and the dragon, the virgin and child with guardian angles, the torments or christ, the crucifixion, the wrapping and burial of christ’s body and the resurrection.
