To the novelist Miss Jean Middlemass (1833-1919) with the details of an offer: "I am authorised to offer you on behalf of Free Press proprietors £30 for the right of publication in Scotland of the story you have in hand & of which we spoke when you called here. We trust to your giving it something of Scottish character: & if you see your way to more direct 'local colouring' by a few scenes from Banffshire all the better! Will you kindly send us the title soon, & the briefest description to admit of its being advertised? I would propose commencing publication five or six weeks from this date [.]". - With printed letterhead "The Daily Free Press" and traces of old mounting. Includes a small collector's note.
