Oblong 8vo. 1 page. With autograph address. Note payable addressed to the bookseller John Nourse in London: "At sight pay to Mr. Benj. Lumley or order the sum fourty seven pounds for value received [.]". - Emerson had a reputation for being a miser: the Encyclopedia Britannica recounts how he declined an offer to become a Fellow of the Royal Society because it would cost him too much, after all the expense of farthing candles he had been put to in the course of his life of study. - Mounted on paper, with a small engraved illustration of a maze mounted below. Accompanied by a steel-engraved portrait of Emerson, likewise mounted on paper.
