First edition. - Inscribed to the Czech playwright Arnošt Dvorák (1881-1933) "in admiration and with fraternal wishes, for his deep and true artistic plans / Franz Werfel / Nov. 22, Prague". Dvorák's translation of the tragedy would be published by Svejda in Prague in 1923. This is Werfel's personal working copy with his ownership "F.W." on the flyleaf, thoroughly annotated and revised in pencil and ink throughout. Several additional pencil annotations in Czech are obviously by the translator. Includes two leaves with Werfel's autograph notes. - A good copy from the library of the Frankfurt lawyer Wilhelm A.
