Descrizione

Paris, Panckoucke, 1782-1787. Three volumes in five. 4to (27.2 x 21.3 cm). Three titles to the Encyclopédie, three titles with wood-engraved vignette, to the Histoire Naturelle volumes; 1990 pp. [I: lxxxxii (sic), 691; II: 712; III: lx, 435]; three large, multi-folded tables. Original grey, paper covered boards with printed label on the spines. = A rare part of the Ultimate Encyclopaedia and the largest of all great Encyclopaedias and the most important work published during the French Enlightement. This section written by the French naturalist Louis-Jean-Marie Daubenton (1716-1800) and the French ornithologist Pierre Jean Claude Mauduyt de La Varenne (1732-1792). It deals with the vertebrates. The three titels differ somewhat (see above). Not included is the second part of the third volume (issued separately), which contains an introduction to the insects. In other words, this is the complete vertebrate section, while the insect part is generally regarded as first part of the an 8 volumes Insectes series, largely written by Olivier and Latreille. Uncut. Some scattered, very light foxing, labels abraded, spine top of the first part perished; otherwise a very good set. Schmitt, S. (2018) Inventaire des livraisons, des auteurs et du contenu de l’Encyclopédie méthodique (1782-1832).
