Il 10 ottobre 881 subì un efferato attacco da parte di una banda di Saraceni, che lo ridusse in rovina. I risultati delle campagne di scavo condotte estesamente per oltre quarant’anni permettono di raccontare una nuova storia di questa città monastica. L’arte, l’architettura e l’archeologia contribuiscono nel loro insieme a ricostruirne non solo la vita al tempo della Rinascita carolingia, ma anche il terribile sacco patito.
