(S.L.N.D.) Sur l’édition de 1521.
Magnificently preserved copy of the Dupont edition for Delarue, printed on Arches paper, circa 1911.
Originally a small chapbook (livret de colportage) inspired by the "Grand Grimoire," leading to numerous reprints, the first of which likely appeared toward the end of the 18th century. This work—the "Masterpiece of Grimoires" according to Papus—is considered dangerous by some, as it is "one of the rare treatises detailing the means of making pacts." (1)
Intelligently designed, this book acts as a conduit for esoteric imagery, magical rituals, Satanic pacts, and folk recipes that have spanned centuries. Directly inspired by the Grand Grimoire and the Key of Solomon, its visual content is embedded in the collective unconscious of our civilization, transmitting occult teachings from the highest antiquity (2) (3).
The creators of this book were certainly aware of this; by finely mastering these codes, they produced a fascinating object on several levels. A source of entertainment for the indifferent, fear for the ignorant, and fascination for the initiate, its presence leaves no one unmoved, regardless of the era in which it is read. Despite its secretive and magical appearance, it possesses an intrinsic universal language that will surely "speak" to our grandchildren just as it did to our great-grandparents.
Regarding the editions titled Le Véritable Dragon Rouge dated "MDXXI" (1521) from the publishers Blocquel, Goupy, and Delarue: these were actually printed between 1860 and 1923. Seven versions have been identified by Frederick Coxe. They differ in content and publisher’s imprints. For instance, the Blocquel edition (c. 1860) bears the mention "Lille Imprimerie de Blocquel." Certain editions after 1866, like the present copy, feature a publisher's "code" on the last page. The final 1923 edition bears no mention of publisher or code.
Duodecimo (163 x 103 mm); half-leather binding, spine with five raised bands and gilt fleurons in the compartments. Marbled paper boards. Gilt title on a red leather label. Marbled endpapers. [1] f. frontispiece, [1] f. title, 108 pp.
Condition: A very fine copy. Small tear at the joint of the lower right tail-cap, without structural fragility. Usual rubbing to the edges. Interior very fresh on Arches paper, with a few rare stains.

(2) Parallel to be drawn with Tarot imagery, which according to Papus is the "Bible of Bibles," the Book of Thoth, and the primitive revelation of ancient civilizations. (Ref: Isabelle Nadolny, Histoire du Tarot, 2019).
(3) As Jung established a link between the individual symbolism of dreams and medieval alchemy: "These are, in particular, vestiges of the spirit of Antiquity... which eventually found asylum in the natural philosophy of the Middle Ages." (C. G. Jung, Psychology and Alchemy, 1944).
