First of the Edition, one of only 1000 numbered copies. Illustrated with a frontispiece of Baudelaire by Pierre Leroy. 8vo, presented in the original blue wrappers printed and decorated in black, with original chemise and slipcase as issued. 262, [2] pp. Very fine and very clean copy beautifully preserved, as pristine, the chemise with a bit of toning to the spine panel, the slipcase with some light wear to the edges.
Edizione: rare in such fine condition. baudelaire's most famous collection of poetry, here rendered into english by james laver. baudelaire's poems are important for their symbolism, and for their impact on the modernist movement. the poems deal with themes relating to decadence and eroticism. both baudelaire and his original publisher were prosecuted under the regime of the second empire as an "outrage aux bonnes mœurs", an insult to public decency.
