Descrizione
8vo., First Edition, some light offsetting from fold-ins to free endpapers; original brown cloth, gilt back, uncut, a very good, bright, clean copy in unclipped dustwrapper. With the publisher's promotional postcard loosely inserted. De la Mare's classic study first appeared as the final essay in 'The Eighteen-Eighties' (1930); this is its first appearance in book form. Green notes that the reference to 'Dr. Paget' on p.49 is a mistake for Dr. Thomas Fowler. It was Hudson who discovered the error and so clarified the supposed 'incubation' of Alice at Whitby in 1854 which caused subsequent biographers so much trouble. Scarce in this condition. Crutch 509a; Williams & Madan, III, ix.
