Descrizione

8vo. 3 parts in one volume. (8), 592 pp.; 160 pp.; 96 pp. In Latin interspersed with Hebrew text. With one folding table of Hebrew conjugations. Near-contemporary full calf. Swiss-printed edition of this seminal work on the grammar and lexicon of the Hebrew Psalter. First published in Zurich in 1645, the present edition is the fourth in German-speaking Europe. Bodmer published two subsequent editions in 1670 and 1685. - This critical study of the Book of Psalms is divided into three sections: the first analyses the roots of the Hebrew words appearing in the psalter, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. The second section provides an alphabetical index of the words, while the third section provides a study of Hebrew grammar. - Victorinus Bythner (or Buttner, ca. 1605-70) was a Polish Hebraist, grammarian and university teacher of Hebrew in England, at both Oxford and Cambridge. In the 1660s he moved to Cornwall to practice medicine. - Inner hinges weakened. Occasionally browned and spotted; title-page trimmed along lower edge. Old ms. shelfmark to spine. A good copy of this "esteemed work" (Brunet). - With several handwritten ink ownerships of what appear to be Swedish collectors to title-page and/or pastedown: C. and L. J. Stridsberg, T. J. Frisendahl and Ol. Unaeus. - VD 17, 12:118917F. Brunet I, 508. Graesse I, 586. Not in Ebert.
