The Illustrated Books'': Reasons of health probably prevented Masson from executing original lithographs when he intended to do so (the 1960s and 1970s). In this period Masson would make, after his preparatory sketches, a finished color drawing. He would then trace the main outline of this finished maquette and apply a special red crayon on the verso of the transparent tracing paper which could be transferred to the plate as a guide. Using this guide, Masson would then draw his original lithograph freely, creating new lines and any flourishes he desired as he worked. The color maquette would further serve as a guide for drawing the color plates.
